In this panel, we talk about burlesque and its relationship with the Badass Woman archetype using examples from movies, popular cultures, and the burlesque community. What does the Badass Woman archetype represent? Does the Badass Woman archetype change perceptions about femininity, sexuality, power? There are those performers who are particularly badass on or off stage whose power as performers, women, and human beings is not to be questioned. What makes a performer (or a particular act) fit the badass archetype? How does being a performer using the badass archetype promote the art of burlesque? Do you need to do "bad things onstage to meet the badass archetype? How can you be a badass performer or a badass human being?

Do you look longingly at pictures of Elvira and 60's pin ups thinking 'I wish my hair would do that?' Well it can! In this class Maggie McMuffin, known in Seattle for her huge hair, will teach you multiple ways to get your hair closer to god. Even better, she'll show you the one tool you need to bring it back down to earth. Maggie will be doing demonstrations on her own head and any willing volunteers. If you have a teasing brush, bristle comb, and mirror feel free to bring them and try out methods for yourself.

  • The legendary Gabriella Maze, "the Body that Doesn't Stop", has been burning up stages all over the world since 1970 and in 2016 will be burning up our stage for the first time!
  • We're delighted to bring back the Most Humorous winner of 2013, Dangrrr Doll, to our stage for something strange and wonderful!

Late night on Friday, we present burlesque in a more intimate setting. Our Bordello has the silky feel of small cabaret, with tables just inches from the stage. A buffet of late night snacks is included with your admission price and there's a cash bar for your cocktails.

The Bordello features sizzling showgirl Red Hot Annie, blowing our way from the Windy City of Chicago. Founder and femme fatale of Vaudezilla, this titian tressed temptress really make the weiners boil!

In between sets, take to the dance floor yourself as our fabulous DJ spins some tunes to get your toes tapping and your feet flying!Please note:

Yes, yoga provides your body with amazing length, strength and flexibility but it also unlocks your sexy, Kundalini energy which is a must for any burlesque routine. Yoga harnesses the power of the breath or the living energy within every person. Conscious breathing in yoga, in life, and especially on stage, allows you to take your performance to the next level because it increases your confidence and gives you conscious control over the emotions you want to portray.

Learn how to create a sexy and spectacular visual using moving fabric. Fabric is a versatile tool used in many dance styles and the techniques taught here can be applied to capes, wings of Isis, veils, wrap skirts, dusters... almost any big piece of fabric! Any dancer can learn how to easily use yards of fabric to create a wonderful, effortless look. Gabriella Maze will review what fabrics work best and how these props are constructed.

Please come dressed for movement (this is a movement class) and bring what you have be that a cape or wings or a duster. If none of those is available to you, you can bring a sheet! The class concludes with a Q&A session in which you can get a private sneak preview of Gabriella's interview on Saturday at noon!

The class starts with a guided a warm-up and then teaches 'classic' style bump and grind combinations. Microphone Technique for the Stage - For any performer who amplifies their voice on stage, from operatic singers to MC's, knowing how to use a microphone properly can transform your performance. In this workshop we begin with an exploration of how sound travels within a space (room/theater) and discuss ways to amplify the human voice. A survey of different microphone types and characteristics leads to a discussion of how a single inch distance from a microphone can make the difference between being heard in a crowded room, being UNDERSTOOD in a crowded room, or sounding like the distorted bass thumps from the low-rider parked in front of the venue.

Do you want to learn how to do stunning kicks, either in a group or on your own? Glorious kicks come from a combination of core strength and hamstring flexibility, but, unless you have proper upper body carriage, nobody will notice your legs at all! Learn all about the mechanics of high kicks, how to properly hook-up in a kick line and how to use your upper body and head to enhance your kicks. We will cover basic anatomy, stretching and strengthening exercises, choreography tips and tricks and will learn an entire kick-line routine.

Although Mayor LaGuardia shut down all of the burlesque theatres in New York City in the 1930s as part of his crusade against "vice," burlesque had already left its indeliable mark on American culture. This lecture argues for the cultural influence of burlesque on classic Hollywood cinema and the golden age of American Musical theatre, tracing scenes, characters, and plotlines from these allegedly less vice-ridden artforms to show how the principles, stylings, and movements of classic burlesque are actually driving forces in these genres.

A burlesque battle royale! Twenty-five hand-picked acts compete for one of the coveted Howard Awards! The Howard Awards, named for Boston's lost burlesque hall, are awarded by last year's winners to the Best Soloist, Best Duo/Group, Most Beautiful, Most Classic, Most Humorous, and Best Hybrid.

The evening is topped off by performances from some of our featured performers, Jacqueline Hyde, Scarlett Letter, and "Miss Dis-aburly-TEASE" Jacqueline Boxx!

Focusing on developing technical proficiency, this class is geared toward performers with various dance backgrounds who want to look like a professional using the floor. This hour long workshop for folks of all genders gives skills for perfecting floor movement. Get grounded while we define proper body carriage, incorporate modern dance and burlesque techniques, and teach challenging choreography which will be the dash of flavor you were hoping to find. Stockings make our legs look sleek and lovely, but it's so exciting when they come off! Discover different types of hosiery, a short history of the stocking, and the best types for removing. Learn how to gracefully remove your shoes, elegantly peel off your stockings, and master the one-handed garter pop. Students should bring thigh-high stockings (or tall socks) and (optional) a garter belt. Wear clothing that makes it easy to show off your legs.

The minute we step on stage we are communicating with our audience. We are sending them signals that they must interpret to understand what we are trying to express. In this workshop we will develop a stronger personal awareness of what signals we are sending to our audience. Through various improvisations we will examine how to make strong expressive choices and find different techniques to make our expressive choices clearer for the audience to understand. Participants will be asked to be both audience members giving feedback, as well as performing the improvisations for feedback.

Learn how to use wings (silk or original pleated) to accentuate movements, add drama to a reveal, create energy and engage your audience. Although Isis wings are most commonly seen in belly dance performances, they can add something extra to any performance when used appropriately. As an added bonus you will work your upper body and get in some extra arm strengthening and conditioning! Bring your own and there will be a few sets of Isis wings available for use on a first come, first served basis.

On Saturday, Feb. 6 a carefully curated selection of his items will be on display in the Exhibit Hall near our Costume Exhibit. This mini-museum includes foundation garments of all sorts, plus related ephemera like advertisements and catalogs.

On Sunday, Feb, 7 the collection comes to life at 12:30 p.m. with a fashion show of vintage and historic pieces on the stage of the Exhibit Hall!

What is your story? What are you trying to tell your audience and what do you want your audience to take away from your performance? These questions and more will be explored and examined as we unpack how the role of storytelling can be used in developing burlesque routines. In this workshop we will identify how to clarify your story, how to transfer your message into a burlesque routine, and consider how props, music and costuming can play a role in the telling of your story. Additionally, we will examine the role the body plays in telling a story and identify elements to pay attention to when creating your choreography.

This class offers Tuesday Tease, a monthly live band show in Seattle, as a case study for building a successful, sustainable live music show. This class is appropriate for producers who want to begin working with live music, and for dancers who want to know more about what it's like to work with bands.

Ballet for Burlesque with Matt Finish is a beginner to intermediate ballet barre-based class focused on movement quality, precision, grace, strength, and flexibility. Dancers will work through traditional ballet combinations with explanations and insight into how classical dance works with burlesque performance techniques. Participants should wear comfortable dance clothing (nothing too loose) and either ballet slippers or jazz slippers. Participants should also bring water and a towel.
